Day-to-Day Summary

Day 1:

Secure the bales in place assuming their final position. The first application of fertilizer should be evenly distributed at a ratio of half-cup per bale. Make sure that the distribution is even from side to side and end to end. The recommended fertilizer is one with high nitrogen content. Also, make sure that the fertilizer you use is the standard and not the sustained-release or slow-release type. You may also want to stay away from fertilizers with an added herbicidal effect.

If you are a gardener who prefers the organic route when initiating their straw bale garden, you may use your preferred organic nitrogen source, such as feather meal. Composted chicken manure is also widely used. Make sure that the organic fertilizer is watered into the bale to ensure even distribution and that larger chunks are disintegrated in the process.
